Welcome to Social Studies 9

Welcome to Social Studies 9

Grade 9 Social Studies will now cover the period from 1750 to 1919. The new course will explore big themes such as conflict, political, social and technological revolution, nationalism, colonialism and imperialism and the impact of these forces on indigenous people in Canada and around the world. This course will expose the problem of racism and discrimination and also explore the demographic changes and migration patterns of people throughout this period.

Dear Parent/Guardian,

Welcome to you homework week!  Please ask your child to LOGIN to their blogfolio so you have access to it.  I ask that you comment on ONE (or more, if you have some time) of the posts and ask your child to share with you some of the activities they feel proud of.  Please see instructions below.

Digital portfolios are assigned to individual students and are kept private. To access a digital portfolio, students must know their unique login and password information. Digital portfolios (Blogfolio) will be assessed during the semester.  Parents/Guardians will have access to their child’s digital portfolio where they can see the learning process. This form of communication allows the student opportunities to practice self-assessment and ownership of their learning (an extremely important skill for this year). Students please login for your parent/guardian.

For homework this week, students will be asked to spend a few moments to review their Blogfolios with their parent/guardian. I ask that you take time this week to comment on one item of your child’s digital portfolio.   Please comment in their own blogs (they will show you how to do this).   Thank you!

Tips on Commenting and supporting learning process:

Under any of the posts will be a COMMENT link > click to open a box. (You can also record in any language if you prefer).

  • Notice thought, capacities and growth. This can include creative and critical thinking in responses
  • Connect with your child’s opinions, stories or ideas.
  • Share your intellectual curiosity.
  • Encourage
  • “You are interested in ______? Me too, here’s an interesting website I’m reading about ________.”
  • I noticed you…
  • The part I found most interesting…
  • A few things you did really well here are…
  • One thing I’m seeing about your work is…
  • Have you considered…

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.  Thank you

Time Capsule..History in the Making

Time Capsule..History in the Making

Living History – What Items would you put in a Time Capsule for future generations to remember during this unprecedented time?

So excited about this lesson and activity for the week.

Credits:  I got this inspiration from an article I read ( and from a cool video by John Spencer! Thank you.

You will be creating a Time Capsule with at least 5 items.  Criteria for this activity can be found on TEAMS next week.  During your scheduled block according to the timetable is when the notification will go out.

Think about possible items/artifacts (photographs, journals, toilet paper, Dr. Bonnie Henry quotes, list of movies or popular songs, drawings, flyers around your neighborhood reminding people to keep physical distance).  Pick items that are important to you.  Make it your own and make it unique!  Part of preserving our history and remembering this time is collecting those items that are important to you!  You should have a personal and meaningful connection to those items.

How will I create my Time Capsule? A few suggestions…

  • Recyclable materials or things around the house to create your Time Capsule (a box for example)
  • Make a Collage of Items
  • Show and Tell with a Video Clip
  • Animation

The goals is to be creative, think of what you have around your home to use for this activity.  You have over a week to complete this assignment so please take your time and make it fantastic! You will post on your BLOG and share the link in TEAMS.  Remember to tell me about those items and why you chose them.

Have fun brainstorming some ideas and being creative!   If I were to discover this time capsule in 25 years what would you want me to remember about 2020?  When your done, find a place to hide it….

Still lost in the Museum.. How do I use TEAMS?

HOW TO UPLOAD TO TEAMS?  I will be connecting with my classes during specific days next week to check in and to provide a quick overview on how to upload.  If you want to try it Click Here or wait until next week.

PLEASE NOTE:  Always check our Social Studies Teams first. Why?  I would like to reduce the number of email notifications and only post on Teams.  This website will also be a good resource.  Thank you

I enjoyed reading your Blog posts, getting emails from you and hearing some of your voices last week.  This week we are learning how to use TEAMS.  The activity is a small one but can help you learn how to upload a MS WORD document in this platform.  Blog is optional this week but a fun creative piece to do with family if you like.  This will take us some time to figure out so be patient and we will work through it together.

I have created a Tutorial Socials 8 Team for Questions  Monday-Friday (11:00am-12:00pm) this is your opportunity to write questions about assignments or check in to say hello to me.

BLOGFOLIO POST #1  – Does history repeat itself?  What can we learn from past pandemics?  Please make sure you give it a proper title (not blogfolio post #1) Include an image formatted correctly.  Review your work and take time to complete it.

Aim for Fridays at 10am to hand it in (this might be difficult for some, don’t panic, and do it at a time that you can.  Some of you may need to write it on paper- that’s fine too).

NOTE:    If you would rather pick ONE of the questions below feel free to do so or use them as prompts to guide you in your response.

  • What would you do? Research how the virus spreads and different plans that leaders have made to slow it or stop it. Then imagine you are an elected official. Write a plan of your own to slow or stop the virus in your own town.
  • What are you excited or worried about?
  • Write a letter to yourself 10 years in the future. What do you want to tell your future self?
  • How do you think the world will be different after the novel coronavirus?
  • What part would you play? People in many, many different jobs play a role in managing this outbreak. Make a list of jobs that can contribute to a solution, and write about which job you’d want and why.

Please use at least 2 good sources and have a works cited at the bottom of your blog post.  Remember to look over your writing piece before submitting on your blog

OFFICE 365 Assignment :  Please make sure you have your office 365 email set up.  I will send out an email to check in and see how you are doing this week.   Thank you

Virtual Meeting and AP Psychology Units Review FRQ Practice Questions

Virtual Meeting and AP Psychology Units Review FRQ Practice Questions

Please check OFFICE 365 email – I have sent you all an email using Office 365 Teams for a virtual meeting on Monday @11am.  Please respond

I hope you are all doing well and keeping safe and healthy.  I will be in contact with all of you next week.  Please make sure you all have your office 365 emails set up and ready to go.  I will require that you use the AP College Board site for the videos they are providing for review of content.  I feel confident that you are all ready for this exam.  We have completed all the required units that will be tested as per the AP College Board Website (AP Psychology – Units 1 through 7 will be tested).  That means you will NOT be tested on the last 2 units (Abnormal Behaviour, Therapies&Treatment and Social Psych – in your textbook it is unit 12, 13 and 14 NOT tested on exam this year)  We finished all the units in class so you are ready to review!   .

AP EXAM WILL COVER ONLY UNITS 1-7 (different from your text units- see image above)

So, I will be posting at the start of the week 2 FRQ that I would like you to hand in on your BLOGS.  I have given you plenty of review practice so now is your time to look at those units you feel need extra attention.  Focus on your writing and the feedback I gave you.  This is a perfect time to use your blog so I can give you weekly feedback.

You got this!  I’m so confident and proud of all of you and I know you will do well.  Remember to take breaks and plan a routine schedule to help you.  Mental health is very important and we have spent time learning about it in this class!   This current situation is something we are all in together.  Let’s try and stay positive and continue our learning the best way we can.

FRQ PRACTICE QUESTIONS FOR WEEK 1 (Please post on Tuesday and Thursday by noon). For example, Question 1 on Tuesday and Question 2 on Thursday.  We will try this schedule.

Question 1:          Unit I: Sample FRQ

History & Perspectives
Philosophers and psychologists have long debated the relative influences of heredity and environment on behavior. Give an example of how each of the following perspectives would explain their position in what is commonly known as the “nature-nurture controversy.” Students must identify which side of the “controversy” their example is addressing.

Humanistic psychology

Evolutionary psychology

Developmental psychology

Cognitive psychology

Question 2:
Research Methods
: Often, methodology questions take one of two forms: the “design your own experiment” form and the “identify the flaws” form. I am providing one example of each.

Research Methods: Question 1: Design an Experiment
Design an experiment that tests the hypothesis, “Cooperative learning is more effective in raising test scores than direct teacher instruction.” Use the following terms in your response:
Independent and dependent variables

Random sampling and assignment

Experimental and control grouping

Ethical considerations

An interpretation of what statistically significant results would mean for this experiment

CSI Florence Activity Monday/Tuesday- Medici

CSI Florence Activity Monday/Tuesday- Medici

In a church on Easter Sunday of 1478 an attempt was made to wipe out the Medici dynasty in one single attack. The attack was only half successful. We know who the attackers were but we do not know who organized the clearly well-planned attack. You will attempt to find out by decoding a secret letter, listening to witness testimony and exploring why some people might have been angry enough at the Medici to commit murder. Your suspects include a powerful rival family, a former employee of the Medici and the pope himself!

Venice is Sinking..Blog Post

Venice is Sinking..Blog Post

Over the last few classes we’ve had a chance to work in groups and come up with solutions to Venice’s problem. Venice, as we’ve all learned, is sinking! This is a major issue because of the harm this is causing for all of the people who call the beautiful, historic city home on the edge of the Adriatic sea.

In our most recent class we had the opportunity to share our ideas with the class, and we saw a great variety of different approaches. Some groups focused on controlling the water level so that Venice isn’t flooded by high tides, either by directly controlling the flow of water or the Sirocco winds from Africa that drive water towards Venice.

As discussed in class, your homework is to post an entry to your blog. The entry is to be one (1) paragraph, and should address the following questions:

  1. What is being done to help Venice now?
  2. What was your group’s idea to help Venice?
  3. How does your solution work?
  4. Why did your group choose this solution?

I was very excited to see all of your presentations, and I’m equally enthusiastic about having the chance to read your blog posts!
